The Unspoken Rule of Don’t Talk

The Unspoken Rule of Don’t Talk

It may seem obvious that the way to combat the unspoken rule of Don’t Talk would be to talk.  That’s a good starting point but it is certainly not the end.

Here are some guidelines you may find helpful:

  • Talk about the tough stuff
  • Don’t sweep anything under the rug
  • Talk directly to one another
  • Don’t engage in “whisper down the lane”
  • Be clear and intentional
  • Know what you are saying and why you are saying it
  • Talk to outsiders
  • Don’t let any guilt or shame get in the way of you communicating with others who support you
  • When it gets very hard, “talk” through various means – text, email, letter writing
  • Be honest
  • If something doesn’t feel right, say something
