Alcoholism and Law Enforcement
Here is a brief (4 minutes) video on alcoholism and law enforcement. This officer, who is local to Montgomery County, shares openly and candidly how alcoholism affected his life. This serves as one more reminder that no one is immune to the disease of addiction. In fact, your job and what you are exposed to may increase your probability of developing an addiction.
As Officer Peterson says, the human brain is not equipped to deal with the daily trauma that first responders witness. Alcoholism and law enforcement is present in approximately 23% of that population. If you or someone you know needs help, reach out. There is nothing to be ashamed of.
Mirmont Treatment has a specialized V.I.P.E.R. program that may be helpful. Valor with Integrity Program for Emergency Responders (V.I.P.E.R.) provides addiction and trauma treatment for law enforcement/police, firefighters, EMTs and combat veterans.
(* I have no affiliation with Mirmont; simply providing a local resource for first responders.)
